In a world of disposable trends, TANABIKU EYEWEAR chooses permanence. Born in Sabae, Japan’s celebrated eyewear-making capital, the brand creates frames with the presence of small architectural objects: bold, tactile and meticulously considered.

Every TANABIKU frame begins with custom-made, 10 mm-thick bio-acetate. Skilled artisans carve and polish the material by hand, preserving the precise edges that give the collection its distinctive depth. The signature “television cut”, inspired by the dimensional form of vintage cathode-ray screens, sets the lenses deeper into the frame and creates an arresting play of light and shadow.

The collection speaks through three strong silhouettes. Suisen sharpens the classic Wellington with a graphic brow line. Sakura transforms the crown panto into a rugged, oversized form that feels almost carved from stone. Fuji gives the teardrop Wellington a contemporary edge. Despite their different personalities, all three share TANABIKU’s unmistakable visual language: substantial temples, sculpted surfaces and robust seven-barrel hinges.

Look closer and the details become even richer. Rivets carry the traditional Japanese Kasumi, or mist, motif, a symbol of eternity. Decorative elements reference kimono patterns and ranma, the intricately carved panels found in classical Japanese architecture. These cultural references never feel ornamental; they are quietly embedded within the construction.

The same care extends beyond the frame. Each pair is accompanied by a Himeji Shironameshi leather case, a paulownia wood box, a Tencel cloth and a serialised warranty made from recyclable Echizen washi paper. Sustainability here feels inseparable from longevity: objects made responsibly, with the intention of being kept.
